Literary lapses, poetry, and miscellany from the curious mind of Rudy Bueckert.

-40°

O what a beautiful morning,

O what a beautiful day,

I have a frostbitten feeling

Hopefully I’ll be okay.

It’s a cold one again. There’s a Christmas song that says something about “December hasn’t changed…” but to my fingers and ears and frost bitten nose it has. This one, the 2025 December that is, has been unusually cold at times. Multiple times. Like quite a few days in the last couple weeks have been at, or near, -40°. January and February are generally our coldest months of the year, so I’m a bit apprehensive; if December has had multiple days with forty below how much colder will the new year be?

There is beauty to be found, even when most of the surrounding world slows down due to extreme cold. You can see for miles, or you could if the sun rose a bit earlier and didn’t set so soon after. I guess it’s too cold for it, too. The cold seems to create little wisps and feathery bits of fog across the highway, most likely the frozen exhaust from all the big trucks that keep on trucking regardless of the weather. People depend on them and the freight they carry so there’s no rest for them.

Whether I’m brave or foolish remains to be seen, but I’ve done my 75km commute nearly every day, regardless of the temperatures. So far so good, although today the heated seat in my car decided to quit working. Apparently I’ve gotten very used to it working because I don’t usually notice it, but today my seat felt unusually cold when I sat down. I’ll have to do some troubleshooting once this frigid world warms a bit, as a heated seat is nigh unto a necessity around here.

Anyway, bye.
